Cardboard Challenge

The Cardboard Challenge is coming April 21st. For the last few years, we have participated in the Global Cardboard Challenge at Cannon and it has always been a HUGE hit and a PERFECT connection for our STEM school and scholars!! This global effort challenges students all over the world to get involved in making cardboard creations, using only cardboard and other recyclable materials.

Watch this video about Caine's Arcade - the project of a 9 year old boy that started this movement.

This year, we are holding this event in conjunction with Earth Day 2017! The Earth Day Cardboard Challenge is unique in that it’s a celebration of ecological values, like sustainability and recycling, and is an opportunity to learn about environmental challenges. We are encouraging our Cubs to use cardboard, recycled materials and imagination to build creative artifacts that address environmental challenges!

Here's how Cannon scholars will get involved in this movement! All that choose to participate will make their cardboard creations at home. On Friday, April 21st, all Cardboard creations will be brought to school and all grade levels will participate in a school-wide Earth Day Cardboard Challenge Gallery Walk, in order to view all of the creative cardboard creations!
All scholars that participate will earn a special STEM spirit stick, in recognition of their innovative thinking and creative use of recyclable materials!

Having trouble wrapping your head around ideas for your child's creation? See below for some inspiration!
  • Alternative Energy - Example - cardboard car that is powered by the wind/sun/water
  • Environmental Green/Recycling - Example - cardboard/recycled materials to build planters, bird houses, etc...
  • Urban Redesign - Example - cardboard "tiny house" within a single cardboard box
  • Arcade games/game boards
  • Homes/habitats
  • Musical instruments
  • Robots
  • Roller coasters
