Texas Winter Weather

Have you ever heard this:  "If you don't like the weather in Texas, just wait a minute and it will change!"   Often times it is warm in the morning and cold by noon. District guidelines allow us to go out for recess as long as the temperature (actual OR feels like) is above 36 degrees.  We believe it is important that the kids go outside to move and get fresh air, but it is important that they are adequately dressed for the weather.  You can help us out by being sure that your child has a jacket with them in the winter.  Nurse Kendra sent all staff these guidelines for winter recess:

Cold Weather:
During times of excessive cold weather, the following precautions will be taken for all outdoor physical activity including, but not limited to: recess, physical education classes, and/or outdoor field trips.

  • Teachers and coaching staffs should be aware of the wind chill factor and take appropriate precautions during cold weather.
  • If a student does not have adequate warm clothing to participate in the outdoor activity, such clothing should be provided or the student excused from the activity.
  • Students should not have recess or Physical Education classes outside when temperature or wind chill factor drops below 36 degrees.
  • On days when the temperature is unseasonably cold, outside recess should be restricted to no more than 15 minutes.
Thanks for helping us keep your child safe, warm and enjoying the outdoors!

Big thanks to the Cannon Dad's Club and all of the volunteers that created the beautiful float for the Grapevine Parade of Lights last Thursday night.  The float was awarded 3rd place, out of 98 entries!  The parade theme was Holiday Memories, so students on the float were all wearing their pajamas and watching old "home movies" being projected onto the large screen at the back of the float.  The film was a compilation of old home movies from many of our Cannon families from holidays they celebrated over the years. What a creative float!

Hurricane Harvey Fundraiser

As a school community, we want to do our part to show our support of those impacted by Hurricane Harvey! We have decided to "adopt" the elementary classes in Aransas County ISD and collect gift cards that can be used by the educators in these Pre-K - 5th grade classrooms to purchase supplies and materials for their classrooms. All campuses in ACISD suffered extensive damage and are currently closed. Their district is working hard to complete the repairs needed to try and reopen schools as soon as possible. Due to the extensive damage they sustained, teachers at these schools are in desperate need of school supplies. However, they currently do not have a place to store any supplies that might be collected and sent to them.

So, we have decided to do a Gift Card Drive to collect gift cards from Target, Walmart, and Amazon, that we will donate to these elementary educators in Aransas County ISD. These gift cards will be sent to our contact in ACISD to be used for the purchase of student supplies and instructional materials. Please note in the image below which gift card we have designated to each grade level at Cannon, in an effort to collect as many gift cards as possible!

Please send your gift cards to school from September 11th-22nd. Students can bring gift cards donations to their classroom teacher. We will look forward to sharing the progress each grade level is making on their gift card donations for this VERY important cause! THANK YOU for your support!!
