Project Linus - Service Project

If you've been a Cannon parent for very long, you know that each year our scholars participate in a service project to help those in our community (or world) that are less fortunate than ourselves. We have even purchased goats and honey bees through Heifer International!  This year we are participating in Project Linus. This organization provides homemade blankets to children who are sick or in need.  We had great fun making these fleece blankets.  Thanks to all of you who donated fleece to help us with this project.

Magnet Challenges

How are magnets used in the real world? We brainstormed ideas that ranged from refrigerator magnets to giant magnets that can pick up cars in a junkyard.  Students then worked in groups to solve challenges that included a broken necklace, a name badge that won't stay on your shirt, a folder of important papers that won't stay closed and hair pins that are rolling around in the dresser drawer.

Check out some of our solutions:

Hour of Code

Tuesday we were excited to have students from the Grapevine Middle School STEM program to teach us more about computer coding. We did a fun activity by writing code to help our "robot" (also known as our partner) to stack cups.  Ask your child to write a simple code for you!

Helping the ECDC Roos

Mrs Molly from the GCISD Early Childhood Development Center came today to ask for our help. The children at the ECDC love PlayDoh but it's expensive and they don't have very much of it!  We are going to learn about PlayDoh and engineer some to send to our friends at the ECDC. Stay tuned to see our work!

Muddy Mats

Scholars worked hard this past week to solve a problem for the Grapevine Animal Shelter. The Shelter needed a floor mat for their location. Scholars examined and analyzed the properties of materials to engineer a floor mat that will soak up water without leaking and not slip on the floor. They tested materials individually and found that not one material met all their needs. By combining materials they were able to reach their goal. We wrote a letter to the Animal Shelter to share with them what we learned.

Can you volunteer?

Mrs. Wohlferd and I are in need of someone who can volunteer 1 hour a week (maybe less) to swap out books for our students in the literacy library.  We are currently doing this on Tuesday, but we are able to work with you if another day works best for your schedule.

The process is not hard - we will have pre-selected the books. We need you to write down the titles of the books we have chosen and re-shelve the books from the week before.

If you can help out, please click on the link here to visit the sign-up genius page to volunteer.

Thanks so much for your help - we appreciate your support.

Dot Day 2016

Today was Dot Day. Dot Day celebrates creativity, courage and collaboration. People from all around the world read the book "The Dot" about a girl who learns that she is indeed talented and can leave her mark on the world by helping others find their own gift.

Our scholars created dots and wrote about how they would make their mark on the world. We skyped with 2nd grade students at Town Center Elementary School and shared our dots.

What a fun day it was!

Engineering Citizenship Awards

This week we have been reading books about good citizens and discussing the characteristics of a good citizen. The scholars came up with lots of good traits, such as good teammate, sharing with others, respectful of others' learning. Teams then engineered an award and worked together to select someone in the class who exhibits the characteristic. They wrote a short speech and then presented the award in class. What a great way to celebrate each other. It feels good when your peers recognize your hard work!

Help Harry

This is Harry:

Today's challenge was to use pipe cleaners, foil, index cards, a cupcake liner and some tape to build a perch for Harry so he could look out at the class. The scholars used all of their teamwork skills to work cooperatively and complete the task. We have grown so much this week as collaborative workers. The next area of growth for us is working towards creating a clear plan and then following the plan.

Don't miss Curriculum Night next Thursday, September 1st from 5:30-6:30. You can see what your scholar built.
